We are just a regular people who has found ourselves as part of an epidemic. Grands raising Grands. Over 2.5 million grandparents are raising their grandchildren today and we are 2 of them. We are Ed and Mindy and we began this journey over 3 years ago. We are not professionals. Wait. Actually we are just not about raising grandchildren. We have both worked many years in our professions.
We have a total of 6 grandchildren 3 of them live across town with our daughter and her husband they are doing amazing. Another one of our grandchildren is our princess and she is for we had custody of her for a year and a 1/2 she recently Was reunified with her father who we call happy daddy HD. He completed his plan got a job and a home he has a had clean drug tests and is doing amazing. We get visitation with her once a week our princess is very happy. She does suffer some from Some developmental delays as well as night terrors. She has been diagnosed with PTSD.
Note that I will be referring to our grandchildren that we have had custody of by their pet names and to the biological fathers as the names the children’s referred to them as. Happy daddy HD and Angry daddy, AD, I will be referring to our daughter whose children they are as darling daughter or DD.
My monkey is 6 years old His biological father is AD. Monkey has been living with us since March of 2017 he was brought to us twice before by DCF. Monkey has been diagnosed with developmental delays, PTSD as well as ADHD he has behavior problems and problems with impulse control. He is in speech therapy and goes to counseling once a week. My little sunshine was exposed to meth alcohol pot opioids along with another prescription drug prenatally. She came to us at 2 weeks old with a horrible diaper rash. She had to go through with troll she had digestive issues. She currently is developmentally delayed and isn’t physical therapy as well as occupational therapy. She will be starting speech therapy soon.
We went to court for TPR which means termination of parental rights. We adopted Sunshine and monkey a month ago. Both AD and DD are incarcerated for selling meth. Both of them voluntarily gave up their rights. We were able to adopt Monkey and Sunshine.
We have been jumping through DCF hoops for over 3 years now trying to get services and support it’s not easy and it’s not easy trying to find the information. This brings me to our reasons for starting this blog.

We believe grandparents raising grandchildren is an epidemic and in order to raise awareness and help other grandparents raising grandchildren we will tell our story and share my research and resources. By researching and writing I am working to make the struggles of grandparents raising grandchildren lessen and to make it more publicly known. We are working to help grandparents raising grandchildren to be more knowledgeable and feel less alone.
With that being said our purpose for this blog is to help other grandparents raising grandchildren by sharing our trials and tribulations we would like to talk about what has worked for us and what hasn’t worked for us and what might work for us in hopes Of helping others in our situation. We will be sharing our research and resources. We will also offer support and the knowledge that you are not alone. Another reason for starting this blog is to raise awareness of this epidemic we are a side effect of the opiate epidemic a side effect that has been overlooked. People need to know that grandparents raising grandchildren are here and we need help and so many ways we need rights and financial assistance. We need support from our friends and our family and from the public we need support from the people that do not understand. We hope that this blog will help others to understand. We want to show our situation to the world.
